Founded in February 1973, we are currently celebrating our 35th year of providing safe and affordable housing for Aboriginal families who relocate to the City of Thunder Bay for schooling, employment and health reasons.
Growth of the Corporation
The Native People of Thunder Bay Development Corporation started with a small portfolio and operated out of the Thunder Bay Indian Friendship Centre until 1986, when the Corporation required more office space, we relocated to our current office.
To this day, some long time tenants still refer to the program as Friendship Centre Housing as the Corporation was an offshoot program as a result of the needs that were realized by community members.
One other program under the Native People of Thunder Bay Development Corporation flag was the Native Employment Opportunities Program which provided not only training but placement in various trades throughout the city and that program, unfortunately dissolved in the early 1990's due to lack of funding.
