Tenant Relations/Placement Worker - (Contract with intention of full time permanent employment)

Position Summary: Native People Thunder Bay Development Corporation (NPTBDC) is a non-profit charitable housing corporation providing safe, affordable geared to income housing for persons of Native Ancestry in the City of Thunder Bay. The Corporation has a housing portfolio of 242 scattered houses and apartments throughout the city of Thunder Bay.

NPTBDC is accepting applications from mature, experienced individuals of excellent moral character for the position of Tenant Relations/Placement Worker.  She/he will perform the following functions.  Assist in the development of a positive working relationship between tenants, NPTBDC and the community.  Promote the general welfare of tenants by establishing a network of contacts with agencies to which they can be referred. Develop workshops and/or work with the tenants on an individual or group basis to deal with awareness of resources, home maintenance, and rent arrears and to assist in addressing issues pertaining to of their developmental, social, emotional, and physical needs.  Investigate and assist in disturbances and neighborhood disputes when necessary.

Assist and or cover the Tenant Placement/Relations Worker position as required.

Knowledge of Native culture is essential. The ability to speak the Native language would be a definite asset.  The candidate requires a post-secondary education in the Social Work or related field and/or a Grade 12 Diploma with a minimum of five years related employment experience and must possess knowledge of the Tenant Protection Act, Human Rights and Disabilities Act, Health and Safety Act, etc.  She/he must have excellent organizational, negotiation, communication, interpersonal skills, diplomacy and discretion in handling confidential information.  She/he also must be able to communicate the needs of low-income Native families; have knowledge of current office equipment, literacy in Windows environment especially Microsoft Office Windows, have a valid driver’s license and use of a vehicle.

Preference will be given to applicants of Indigenous ancestry who have experience working with people of Indigenous ancestry and who possess an awareness of the culture.
