Indigenous Student Scholarship

Scholarship opportunity for Indigenous students living in non-profit housing. 

ONPHA's Kathleen Blinkhorn Indigenous Student Scholarship is now accepting applications. This scholarship is specifically designed to support Indigenous students living in non-profit housing in Ontario.

The application deadline for this scholarship is Friday, May 31, 2024. If you are or you know someone who might be interested, please share this opportunity with them.

National Ribbon Skirt Day in northern Ontario - January 4, 2024

National Ribbon Skirt Day, a day where Indigenous women across Canada are encouraged to wear their traditional regalia to celebrate their culture, their strength and their connection as women.

Canadian Senator Mary Jane McCallum introduced a bill in March 2021 to have the day formally recognized. Bill S-219, received royal assent and passed in Parliament in December 2022.

The Noojmawing Sookatagaing Ontario Health Team hosted an Indigenous Leadership Session on November 21^st at the Victoria Inn.

Indigenous Veterans

November 8th marks National Aboriginal Veterans Day in Canada. On this day, we mark the important contributions and remember the many sacrifices made by First Nations, Inuit, and Métis in uniform.  They were far from home. Far from their communities and families. Yet when Canada called, they responded. They served.

Between World War I and World War II, Indigenous volunteers were often forced to overcome many challenges to serve in uniform, from learning a new language and adapting to cultural differences, to having to travel great distances from their remote communities just to enlist. Although exact statistics are difficult to determine, historians believe that between 7000 - 8000 Status Indians enlisted. That amount does not include the thousands of Inuit, Métis, and Non-Status Indians who volunteered and fought.

A new meal program for seniors and Elders in Thunder Bay, Ont. serves a dual purpose.

Roots Community Food Centre offers free meals twice a week at their new dining room located at 450 Fort William Road in Thunder Bay.

Besides serving fresh food grown locally, Roots also aims to bring cultural dishes to the table, working with partners such as the Thunder Bay Indigenous Friendship Centre and Fort William First Nation to secure wild game.

Indigenous artists score big with beaded medallions and jersey design for the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Toronto Maple Leafs sported their customized medallions for Indigenous Celebration Day on Saturday night along with Woodland-styled, Indigenous logos on their jerseys.
